    While it’s Warm.

East Tennessee seems to be getting a nice reprieve from the cold weather this week, but the ice and snow will probably be back. Here are 4 simple things you can do to make sure your home is prepared.

    1) Check for Tree Limbs. Is there a branch that could knock out power to your home or maybe one that could fall on a parked car? This is a perfect time to make one last check and be sure that any limbs that are dead or dying are trimmed back. Once a winter storm hits, you will be glad you did.
    2) Check your furnace filter. To get the most out of your HVAC, standard filters should be changed every 4-6 weeks. For more information, check out The Family Handiman.
    3) Check your Ceiling Fans. Most of us know that we can use our ceiling fan to cool a room in the summer. However, your fan may have a switch that allows you to spin in the opposite direction to pull air upwards, which pushes the warm air that naturally rises back down. This can give your heating unit a much-needed respite during the colder months of the year.
    4) Mind your Thermostat. According to Popular Mechanics, for every degree you lower the thermostat during heating season, you’ll save between 1 and 3% of your heating bill. Make it easier with a programmable thermostat; they are widely available for as little as $50, and the average family will save $180 a year with one.
